The Countess of Wessex looked grave as she spoke with medical staff at the hospital in Panzi, which has treated over 70,000 victims of sexual abuse in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The royal spoke with doctors and nurses on Dr Mukwege’s team(pictured above) who work with survivors to overcome their trauma, and support their reintegration into society

The Countess saw first-hand the pioneering and critical medical treatment provided to those who have endured brutal, conflict-related sexual violence and trauma during a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo
